While Philadelphia gets the Pope this weekend, Tucson gets my mom. She's my first visitor here and I feel like I'm an expert even though I've been here only 7.5 or so weeks. After my classes this morning, we picked up some Arizona gear for the family at the bookstore and headed to 4th Ave for shopping and lunch at Caruso's. It's an Italian place open since 1938 and still owned by the same family. Really good food. While on 4th, I had to convince my mom not to buy anything but I do have to admit there are a lot of cool things. We didn't really have plans for the rest of the afternoon so we headed out to eastern part of Tucson to a mall. We were confused about why everything was on sale--supposedly it is mid-season sale time? Who knew? Dinner was downtown at Cafe Poca Cosa, which was such a treat. We both order the sampler platter, which was a mix of three things off today's menu--but we didn't what three! For the most part, it was good. The lighting was terrible but now I have leftovers for dinner on Sunday. Before we headed back, I wanted to see the 30 foot neon cactus on Oracle Road. I've only been by during the day. It's really cool and reminiscent of earlier times when neon signs dotted Tucson, especially along the Miracle Mile that brought visitors into Tucson. It was a welcoming sign for the first full day for my mom.
